DV

DV is a digital video format designed to be used for consumer grade digital video.

  • DV & Firewire Central - A site devoted to DV (and its related formats: DVC, DVCAM, DVCPRO, etc) and IEEE 1394 (Firewire, i.Link).

  • The DV, DVCAM, & DVCPRO Formats - Technical details, FAQ, and links about DV, DVCAM, and DVCPRO formats.

  • libdv - The Quasar DV codec. A free and open source (GNU GPL) software decoder for DV format video.

  • dvgrab - A free and open source software tool for getting digital video (in DV format) from a camcorder, connected by IEEE 1394 (Firewire, i.Link), for Linux.

MPEG

MPEG is a popular movie format.

  • MPEG Home Page - The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) site, which contains information documents, news, and other stuff.

  • FAME - A project that aims to bring a free and open source (GNU GPL) real-time MPEG encoding to personnal computers.

  • mpeglib - A free and open source (GNU GPL) software library for the mpeg data format.

  • MPEG-4 Industry Forum - Provides resources to help out with the adoption of the MPEG-4 format.

MJPEG

MJPEG is the video version of (the still image format) JPEG.

  • MJPEG/Linux square - Mjpeg tools is a suite of programs (released under the GNU GPL) which support video capture, editing, playback, and compression to MPEG of MJPEG video. Edit, play and compression software is hardware independent. Capture supports MJPEG hardware (Buz, Miro DC10+ etc).

more Video Codecs and Formats

These are links to other video codecs and formats, which were not listed above in their own section.

  • AA-lib - The Ascii-Art library is a portable ascii art graphics library. It can change graphic pixmap images into Ascii-Art pictures.

  • FIASCO - The codec FIASCO -- Fractal Image And Sequence COdec -- is a fractal still image and video codec system for low bit-rates based on the theory of Weighted Finite Automata, and released under the GNU GPL.

  • reetpvr - A video4linux recorder application which also implements a huffyuv-style lossless-but-high-bandwidth codec. It is intended for large, high-quality recordings of video input; and is suitable for capaturing full screen, analog video feeds.

  • VP3 - An open source video codec which aims to be the MP3 of Video.

Audio Codecs

  • FLAC - A free and open source, lossless audio format and codec.

  • LPAC - A lossless audio codec.

  • Ogg Vorbis - A fully open, non-proprietary, patent and royalty free, general purpose compressed audio format for high quality (44.1-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel. (This places Vorbis in the same class as audio representations including MPEG-1 audio layer 3, MPEG-4 audio (AAC and TwinVQ), and PAC.)

  • Shorten - Shorten, also known as .shn, is a lossless audio codec.

Video I/O

  • Video for Linux 2 (V4L2) - An overhauled video for Linux library (and API) made to be more flexible and extensible, and to support more kinds of devices.

  • dvgrab - A free and open source software tool for getting digital video (in DV format) from a camcorder, connected by IEEE 1394 (Firewire, i.Link), for Linux.

  • Buz under Linux - A place for information about the Iomega Buz and its support under Linux.

Garbage Collection

Packaging

  • CheckInstall - A program that replaces the "make install" step (in the usual "./configure; make; make install" process). CheckInstall will run "make install" for you (or whatever you tell it to run) and keep track of every file modified by this installation. CheckInstall will then, after that, create a Slackware, RPM or Debian compatible package and install it (in the manner appropriate for you system).

  • Buildpkg - A package building system that gives you the opportunity to create package system (like rpm, dpkg, stc.) independent descriptions (.def) which can be used to create binary packages on every system.

  • EPM - The ESP Package Manager is its own "portable" distribution format, and also a tool that supports the generation of several vendor-specific formats. This allows you to build software distribution files for almost any UNIX and Linux operating system from the same sources.

  • Autopack - Makes it easy to add rpm, deb, pkg, etc, to automake as targets.

Misc

  • Guide To EDL Management - Edit Decision Lists (EDLs) are the primary method of transferring information about an edit project between editing systems.

  • GOVIA - GOVIA will be a P2P system for the transfer of free media for use in education.
